We’ve got this, right? We are confident that we can know our stuff. We know the steps to take to know their stuff.  We understand the imperative to know our audience.

And now we’re excited about championing change!

Screech.

Now, I know there are some of you who love change. You thrive on it. You are as flexible as Gumby. You can pivot on a dime.

The rest of us? Not so much. But here’s the thing.

Change is inevitable. Leaders strategize change. Managers manage change. Sought-after professionals embrace change. Embracing change means finding a way through the change and making the best of the situation!

As my friend, motivational speaker Steve Gilliland says, “Change is inevitable and growth is optional.”

While change can be an important mechanism for progress, it’s important not to create change simply for change’s sake. If change is intended to produce better employee relations, increase market share, improve quality, or increase efficiencies or economies of scale, go for it.

One of the hardest parts about championing change Is to do so when you think your leader’s great idea is flawed. This is where you draw on know your audience and discuss your concerns with the leader privately. No matter how they decide to proceed, your role is to help drive the change forward (and to never utter the words “I told you so.”).

One of the best things you can do to embrace change is to do your level best to understand the why behind the change. We may not yet have a seat at the C-suite table where decisions are made that cause significant change, but we can ask curious questions, adopt a listening stance, and avoid complaining.

We can lead by example: We can answer questions. We can listen to concerns. We can encourage those most impacted by the change and help them find ways to adapt appropriately. To be a champion for change, you need to be:

  • Transparent (honest)
  • Discreet
  • Positive
  • Energetic

As you develop a healthy respect for change, you’ll continue to grow as a sought-after professional and leader.
