Three Types of Employees

If you were to look around your office right now, could you identify the different types of employees you have? I’m not talking about identifying their roles or positions. You’ll be able to name the accountants versus the sales team. Instead, I’m referring to the three different types of employees as identified by the Gallup organization: engaged, not engaged, and actively disengaged.

The categories are fairly self-explanatory. You want engaged employees — they’re the ones working with passion and who feel a strong and meaningful connection to the company; these are your “go to” people. (I’ll bet you can name them right off the top of your head, can’t you?!) Those that are not engaged can be thought of as fence sitters – some good days, some bad days. Again, I’ll bet you can name a few members of that group too. This is the group YOU can make an impact on.

And then there are the actively disengaged workers. These employees are miserable at their jobs and the more misery they can spread, the better! Those who are actively disengaged can suck the life out of everyone around them. Guess who we spend most of our time with?

Ideally, you’d have a company full of engaged workers, but sometimes that won’t be the case. Instead, if you’re aware of the different types of employees you have, you can check in with the not engaged ones and find ways to get them excited about their role again. It’s also a good way to see who has checked out beyond repair.
