If one of your staff recently had surgery, or is home fighting the latest virus, sharing that information could be putting you at risk for a HIPAA violation, which comes with a $50,000+ fine.  A good rule of thumb is that when sharing information with anyone about your employee, do they need to know?

Your HR department may need to know, your payroll department may need to know and your employee’s direct manager may need to know, but that is where the sharing should end. Failure to do so puts you and your company at risk.
