When Applying For a Job, some tips on what NOT to do...

Posted from greytalk.com with permission from Donna aka ChiliDog
I've gotten permission to hire somebody full time for a minimum of 6 months as a data entry clerk. I posted the position on one of our local web sites and, in the course of a week, got over 50 applications.

So I've started weeding through them and started interviewing.

Now I KNOW that interviewing is stressful but here's what NOT to do:

When I call you for an interview and ask you to come for 8 AM don't say to me "oh, that's early" - What time do you think you'd be starting the job? Noon?

While I am on the phone with you and are explaining how to get to my office don't tell me "oh I know the hospital well - I had a lump/liver/spleen/thyroid/lung/fingernail/eyebrow/nosehair removed there, or more generally I had a vasectomy/thyroidectomy/prostatectomy or any other "ectomy" there." I don't care that you, your brother, mother, father or cousin Earl fifteen times removed was born here or had surgery here or died here or even worked here. Too much information. During the interview, or better still if I hire you and you want to share that info - fine. Not when I call.

Don't be late for your appointment. Don't be too early for your appointment. I'm not a doctor's office. I will take you on time.

Don't sit with your coat all buttoned up (you could have left it in the cloakroom at the front of the office). The sweat pouring down your face is not really attractive.

Do make a comment about my dogs. Their pictures are all over my office because I love them and they are important to me. It's a greyt ice-breaker, trust me.

Do shake my hand. It's polite. However, don't grab my hand and apply 2000 pound pressure, (ouch!), nor give me a fishy limp hand. Eeww.

And most importantly SPELLCHECK YOUR CV before sending it in.

<phew> I feel better now.

BTW - anybody need a job - I'm really not that b*tchy a boss
