Most children have some dream of what they want to be when they grow up, but it usually has a narrow focus: celebrity, sports star, President of the United States; sometimes a teacher or author.
And, that's because most kids haven't been exposed to a wide variety of careers and don't know about the wonderful options that are available to them.
Enter "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work" day on Thursday, April 22, 2010. The program's purpose is to go beyond "shadowing," in order to show them the values of their education, help them discover the power of possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life, and provide them an opportunity to share how they envision the future and begin steps toward their end goals in a hands-on and interactive environment that is key to their achieving success. This year's theme is "1 Youth, 1 Dream, 2Morrow's Leader." Providing these opportunities for boys and girls may well be the first time they've ever had a discussion about what their futures might look like. It may be the first time they've been encouraged to go to college and to think about how they may create a work/life balance in their future. The more opportunities they have to discuss and think about these issues, the better prepared they will be.
Think about participating in your workplace - it 's a benefit for your employees that doesn't break the bank. After all, it could be the opportunity of a lifetime for a child who otherwise could fall through the cracks.
