Fortunately, I don't need bailed out, I'm pretty sure who I'm going to vote for in the election and my only employee is registered to vote. So, I can breeze through the rest of this year, right? Wrong!
There's some ugly "stuff" creeping around in the House and Senate (now come on - I didn't mean it that way!) Some of it stands a good chance of being passed and, frankly, I don't know how good that's going to be for small business. (Sorry to my labor friends out there but...) Here are just two examples: Card Check (Federal) and Breaks/Lunches (State).
"Card Check" - if this passes, a labor union will only need to get a majority of YOUR employees (6 is a majority of 10 employees) to sign a "card" saying they are interested in having a union. Congratulations - you WILL have a union. Almost since the origin of labor unions, employees have always had the right to a confidential ballot election - their decision was their business and only their business. The Card Check legislation will take away the individual's right to keep their decision private. Find out more at http://www.uschamber.com/wfi/default.
H.B. (House Bill) 1756 and 1757 will provide for DESIGNATED break and lunch periods for all employers. Imagine you have only one IT technician on staff and they MUST take their lunch at 12:00. At 12:05 your entire computer system locks up but the tech is on their designated lunch break. Guess what? Everyone will have to wait until 12:30 when lunch is over. Or picture having to go to the bank on Friday on YOUR designated lunch hour...
Now, do you know who writes to our senators and representatives and congressmen? Calls and letters are made by a small majority of people that are organized by bigger groups with an agenda. (Sorry again to my labor friends but...) You would be amazed at how easy it is to contact your representative either via phone or electronically. You're not always going to get through to them but you WILL speak with someone in their office who will listen to your point of view and forward your comments.
Don't know who to call in PA? Go here: http://www.legis.state.pa.us/
Really, you can make a difference – let your voice be heard! (And – get out and vote on November 4!)
