When your employees are sweating out the dog days of summer in July, it's the perfect time to surprise them with a BBQ with you, the boss, cooking. Not to put you in the hot seat, but your staff will love it that you took the time to plan a special event for them and that you're willing to pitch in and make it happen.
This year we're been giving you tips on no-cost, low-cost benefits and the BBQ idea is a tasty one. It's not too complicated, everyone always loves food and you can have it in the parking lot during the regular lunch break and, if you have multiple shifts, make sure you have one for each shift.
Now, if you're immediately saying, "No Way!" think about it further. Your staff works hard for you, you work hard to keep your company successful; shouldn't everyone get a break at some point to celebrate?
Of course, there are variations on the theme if you just don't want to take the fun outside. Consider doing a sub day in the office, or have a beach day complete with sand, Hawaiian shirts and shorts. Get creative and enjoy the camaraderie you're creating.
The question of alcohol consumption always comes up when we mention BBQ's and other events. So, what to do?
The first place to look is in your policy handbook. You probably already have a policy regarding alcohol consumption on company time or while attending company sponsored events.
No policy? Then we should talk. It's a dicey subject and can be the cause of possible litigation and other troublesome activities.
I don't want to spoil the picnic fun that you had going on in your head, though. I just want to encourage you to take a look at what your policy should be so that everyone has clear guidelines.
Call me for help with your policy or if you need to update your current one. There have been a lot of changes in the past few years and you'll want to stay current.
In the meantime, fire up the grill and let your employees relax while you serve up the burgers.
