A Trip to Washington, D.C,

Once again, an opportunity presented itself to visit my Representatives and Congressmen on their own turf. A little daunting with your first trip – you tend to act like a tourist and can be easily overwhelmed by the location, the sites and the people you meet – and you get better each time you go back. Hey, these people work for me, right? (It’s also helpful when your Chamber of Commerce has made all the arrangements including the transportation!)
The purpose of our trip this time was to discuss:
·         Transportation/Infrastructure (it means more than tar and paving)
·         Consumer Financial Protection Agency (?)
·         Health Care Reform (note, this is not a dirty phrase)
·         And, of course, EFCA (note, this IS a dirty phrase!)
Jessica Heilweil, Senior Coordinator for the US Chamber, served as our hostess for the morning. Her counterparts briefed us on Health Care and Transportation. Then, the moment we were all waiting for – Senator Casey joined us. No, wait, Senator Casey sent a staff member (again). Poor Will Hansen – our comments to him were “Please tell Senator Casey we’d love to see him in our region some time.”
The best part of the morning was yet to come – Senator Specter DID join us. (Of course, we were meeting in his conference room so it made sense that he met with us.) If there is anything I have learned from these trips to DC, it’s that the Senator Specter and our Congressmen are ALWAYS glad to spend time with you. It may not be much time, but they value their time with you. (The key? Be prepared, be concise and be respectful of their time – who knows when a vote may be called!)
After a bipartisan lunch (they serve both Coke and Pepsi products in the cafeteria), we spent about an hour with Todd Platts (R-York+), Bill Shuster (R-Perry+) and Tim Holden (D-Schuylkill+) talking about their “side” of the Hill. Healthcare and Transportation were the key issues. Then, alas, it was time to board the bus for the trip home on Route 95, through Baltimore, during rush hour.
My rambling ends with a summary of the various discussion points that we covered that day. Please, take the opportunity to make the trip some time. It’s not that overwhelming and it is your right to exercise your voice with those that, literally, represent you as an American Citizen. (Plus, if you visit Specter’s office, it’s right across the hall from Alaska! Nope – didn’t get to see Sarah, darn it!)

US Chamber commentary:
HEALTHCARE:
·         Explore all cost control measures that have been discussed in the past 10 years
·         Aggressively regulate healthcare
·         Include a web portal for product comparisons and pricing
Senator Arlen Specter (D: PA)
EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT
·         Depoliticize National Labor Relations Board
o    Take prompt action on notifications with time limits
o    Provide injunctive powers for relief on both sides
·         Retain secret ballot – “committed to no” vote if secret ballot is not included
·         Arbitration
o    Element of bad faith on employer side
o    Use Last Best Offer to drive reasonableness and avoid arbitrator just “picking” a side
Senator Specter’s aide then asked us about the proposed $3000 incentive for Job Creation – we were not in favor of it…
Congressman Todd Platts (R: York +)
Did you know he commutes to Washington EVERY DAY so that he can remain close to his family and his community???
·         taking a wait and see attitude about healthcare
·         concerned about the “speed” at which to bring things to vote i.e.: presented with a 1050 page bill on the afternoon of 7/17/09 and a vote was called on Thursday morning; discussion broke at 6AM Friday with a return at 9 AM and they still haven’t moved for the final vote
Congressman Bill Shuster (R: Perry +)
·         believes the Republicans will pick up a few chairs during mid-term elections
·         life of a majority party historically only averages 8 years
Congressman Tim Holden (D: Schuylkill +)
Did you know his grandfather was the original organizer of the United Mine Workers?
·         Transportation received $48 Billion in stimulus but may need to wait 18 months for a transportation bill
·         Need to find common ground on healthcare with emphasis on seniors, uninsured and eliminating pre-existing clauses
·         No Child Left Behind has expired but not moved forward because no one knows what to do with it
·         “Divided government works because you have to work together.”

Hello
I'm Looking to buy Entertainment Centers or Wall Units For a new hotel chain I'm working at in.
Can anyone give me a good recommendation of where is the leading deal on these? I live in Alabama and I heard that the most important thing about these Entertainment Centers is the cost of shipping and installation.
Thanks

C.

some advice needed:
I'm Looking to buy TV Centers For a condo I'min the process of buying.
Can you guysgive me a good recommendation of where is the top place to buy these? I live in Jersey and I heard that the big thing about these room dividers is the cost of their shipping -they tend to be heavy.
I also found this great article about choosing your entertainment center: http://www.squidoo.com/ent3rtacn3tr

Want modded controllers cheap? I got mine at www.RapidFireMods.com! They are sooo amazing! Their prices are the best and their products are top notch. I am part of a Gamebattles team/clan and we got sponsored by them. Just letting you all know...TO CHECK THEM OUT! Don't buy from others! They're only imitators and don't provide as good as a product.

Hey Folks
I've been around here for a while now, and I finally found something worth writing about: I found a great deal on custom Modern Wall Units and Entertainment Centers . These guys have 24/7 call-in service and they installed AND delivered my wall unit all for Free!!! I just bought from them, and I've never had a more seamless internet buy -they ACTUALLY called me to confirm the order and talk about delivery time… unreal!

Cheers
